Lutron Electronics has released its inaugural Lighting Trend Report which was based on a Lutron/Harris Poll survey and expert opinions.
The study reveals that lighting is a top priority in home design for American homeowners. According to the survey, 91% believe that quality lighting is crucial for their home, and 75% say it’s one of the most important design elements.
Cecilia Ramos, Lutron’s Senior Director, emphasized that while people often focus on furniture and decor, lighting is an essential factor that can influence mood, appearance, and overall experience within a home.
The report aims to explore consumer preferences and the growing interest in innovative, high-quality lighting solutions. It also seeks to understand how lighting is becoming more central in shaping people’s home experiences.
Let’s look at what it entails.
Eco-Friendly Choices are Becoming Mainstream
A significant majority of U.S. homeowners (81%) are interested in reducing their environmental impact and are willing to invest in green solutions. Smart and automated lighting systems can help achieve this by optimizing energy use and minimizing waste.
LED light bulbs are a particularly good choice, as they last 50 times longer and consume at least 75% less energy compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
In addition to the environmental benefits, well-designed lighting can also enhance daily routines, making life more convenient and comfortable. Nearly 4 in 5 U.S. homeowners (78%) are willing to invest in LED lighting to help reduce their carbon footprint.
A Cozy Place to Relax
90% of U.S. homeowners believe it’s vital for their homes to be a sanctuary where they can unwind and disconnect from work or external stressors. This sentiment aligns with the growing “resimercial” trend where elements of commercial luxury, like spa-themed bathrooms and resort-like backyards, are incorporated into residential designs.
For many, the ambiance is pivotal for relaxation, and lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood. In fact, about 78% of U.S. homeowners consider adjustable lighting essential for creating the right atmosphere.
Lutron provides lighting control options that allow homeowners to tailor their environment, such as dimming lights to resemble the cozy glow of candlelight.
Connection to Nature
An impressive 82% of U.S. homeowners emphasize the significance of having a link to nature in their everyday routines.
Additionally, an even greater 87% of U.S. homeowners believe that incorporating a sense of nature is essential in their home design.
A vital avenue to foster this connection is through the inclusion of natural light, encompassing both sunlight and modern LED solutions that replicate the varying color temperature and brightness of natural sunlight across the day.
With a portfolio exceeding 15,000 energy-efficient products, Lutron has a presence in over 100 countries. Notably, Lutron products contribute to a savings of around 10 billion kWh of electricity in the United States alone, amounting to roughly $1 billion in annual utility expenses.
The company’s innovative beginnings, including the creation of the first solid-state electronic dimmer by its founder Joel Spira, are honored at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
